If you already have a properly rated outlet (like a NEMA 14-50) and you’re simply plugging in a portable Level 2 charger, that part is plug-and-play. But any new circuit, new outlet, or hardwired charger installation is electrical work that requires a permit and a licensed electrician in California. Beyond the legal requirement, a licensed electrician makes sure the circuit is sized correctly, the breaker matches the charger’s amperage, and the installation passes inspection, which protects both your home and your charger’s warranty.

  • Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt household outlet and adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour. No installation is usually needed, but charging a depleted battery can take a full day or more.

Not directly, and we don’t recommend trying. A dryer outlet and an EV charger have different plug configurations, different circuit designs, and are often on a shared circuit with specific amperage limits for that appliance. Running a mismatched load through it can trip breakers, damage the outlet, or create a fire hazard. If you want to use that same electrical capacity for EV charging, an electrician can install a dedicated, correctly rated circuit and outlet for the charger instead.

Electrical Panel Upgrades

A standard 100-amp to 200-amp panel upgrade typically runs $4000-6000 for most homes, including the new panel, breakers, permit, and labor. These jobs require a new meter base, upgraded service line, and utility coordination. Older homes, panel relocations, and homes needing significant rewiring will land toward the higher end.

Usually, yes. A panel upgrade replaces the panel itself, the breaker box that distributes power throughout your home, and in most cases your home’s existing branch wiring to outlets and fixtures doesn’t need to be touched. Rewiring is a separate project that’s only needed if your existing wiring is outdated, undersized, or unsafe (like aluminum branch wiring or old cloth-insulated wiring). For most homeowners planning to add an EV charger, heat pump, solar, a home addition, or simply dealing with an old panel, yes. A modern panel gives you the capacity and safety margin to run today’s appliances without tripped breakers or overloaded circuits, and it’s often a required step before adding solar or an EV charger anyway. It’s also a practical safety upgrade if your panel is decades old or a flagged brand. That said, if your current panel meets your household’s needs and isn’t outdated or failing, there’s no requirement to upgrade just for the sake of it.

Generally, no. Routine panel upgrades are considered home improvements and are the homeowner’s responsibility, similar to a roof replacement or replacing plumbing pipes. Insurance is more likely to come into play if a panel failure causes damage, like a fire, or if your insurer requires you to replace a known-hazardous panel type (such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco) as a condition of coverage.   • You smell burning or see scorch marks near the panel (this is an emergency, shut off the main breaker and call an electrician immediately)
