Homes are drawing more power than they used to. Between EVs, solar, heat pumps, and general appliance upgrades, a lot of Southern California homes are running into the same question: is my panel actually equipped to handle this?
Why this matters more now than it used to
Your electrical panel, the breaker box that distributes power throughout your home, was likely sized for the appliances and demands of the era it was installed. Add an EV charger, a heat pump, or a solar system on top of that original load, and older panels can quickly run out of headroom.
This is why a panel upgrade often comes up as a required first step before adding solar or an EV charger, not as an optional add-on. A modern panel gives you the capacity and safety margin to run today’s appliances without tripped breakers or overloaded circuits.
Do you need a full rewire too?
Usually not. A panel upgrade replaces the panel itself, and in most cases your home’s existing branch wiring to outlets and fixtures doesn’t need to be touched. Rewiring is a separate project that’s only needed if your existing wiring is outdated, undersized, or unsafe, like aluminum branch wiring or old cloth-insulated wiring. A licensed electrician can tell you during an inspection whether your home needs a panel upgrade, a rewire, both, or neither.
Signs it’s time for an upgrade
A few common indicators we look for:
- Your panel is rated for 100 amps or less and you’re adding an EV charger, solar, a heat pump, or other major appliance
- Breakers trip frequently or won’t reset
- Lights flicker or dim when appliances kick on
- Your panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel, both known for higher failure rates
- Your panel is 25 or more years old
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having a licensed electrician run a load calculation. That’s the only way to know definitively whether your existing panel has the capacity you need, or whether it’s time to upgrade.
